Exactly 3 months before his 3rd birthday, our first son, Niko was admitted to the hospital for unknown pain and ongoing fever. There was no way I could have imagined that that event would divide our lives into the “before/after”. After two weeks of hell and testing we received the diagnosis of stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma and immediately started our fight.

This was meant to be my fun, whimsical blog about pregnancy and parenting. A story of childhood cancer was definitely not one I had ever wanted to tell. It’s not even one I would have wanted to read, as I don’t like to subject myself or those around me to unnecessary sadness.

And yet – the amount of interest, support and involvement and care that has poured over us makes it clear – this is a story YOU want to read. So let me officially open this new chapter in my blog. The “movement” I want to create for Niko isn’t based on being angry about the cancer, or punching it in the face or showing it who’s boss, etc. To me all those have a high degree of negativity. Instead – I just want to focus on the positive – for Niko and – for every one that wants to support him. I’m sure this makes each and every one of us realize that life is always too short, and never enough. And hopefully it gives each of you a little extra urgency to make the most of every single day and really focus in on what’s important.

So if you’d like to do something, or come across something funny online – if you post it to instagram with the tag #nikolikes – we’ll be sure to show it to Niko!

Thank you all so much for not leaving us alone with this, because one on one, cancer is a scary beast! But together – it’s something we can live with, and even be happy.
